
What 'Fast Glass' Really Buys You
Photographers talk about "fast glass" the way runners talk about their shoes — with a specificity that can sound like jargon until someone explains what the word is actually doing. It has nothing to do with speed in the literal sense. A "fast" lens is one with a wide maximum aperture, something like f/1.4 or f/1.8, capable of opening up far more than a typical kit lens ever could.
What that width buys, in practical terms, is light. A wider aperture lets more of it reach the camera's sensor in the same fraction of a second, which means a fast lens can keep a shutter speed quick enough to freeze motion even in a room that would leave a slower lens struggling. That matters more at a wedding than almost anywhere else in photography, because a wedding day moves through every kind of light in a single afternoon — bright outdoor sun, a shaded church interior, a reception lit by little more than candles — and none of it waits for the photographer to catch up.
The second thing fast glass buys is a particular look: a very shallow depth of field, where the subject sits crisply in focus while the background dissolves into soft, glowing colour. That effect — often called bokeh — is one of the more recognisable signatures of a wide-aperture portrait, and it's part of why couples often gravitate toward images where they're the only sharp thing in the frame, everything else reduced to soft shapes and light.
None of this makes fast glass automatically the right choice for every frame. A wide-open aperture narrows depth of field so much that, at close range, even a subject's nose and ears can fall slightly out of focus relative to their eyes — fine for a single dreamy portrait, unworkable for a group photo where everyone needs to be sharp. Fast lenses also tend to be heavier, pricier, and sometimes less versatile across a zoom range than their slower counterparts, which is exactly why professional kits usually mix fast primes with more flexible zooms rather than relying on one type alone.
Where fast glass earns its reputation most is in exactly the conditions a wedding day guarantees at some point: a dim reception, a candlelit dinner, a ceremony held in a shaded chapel with no flash in sight. In those moments, the extra light a wide aperture admits can be the difference between a shot that holds up and one that has to be pushed so hard in ISO or shutter speed that quality suffers elsewhere. It's less a luxury feature than a practical answer to a problem every wedding day eventually presents.
For a couple, the term is worth recognising mostly so a photographer's gear talk doesn't sound like an alien language. "Fast glass" isn't a claim about speed of shooting or turnaround — it's simply a lens built to work with very little light, and to work well specifically in the low, uneven, unpredictable lighting that real weddings, rather than studios, actually provide.
