How Much Does a Wedding Photographer Cost in SA?

How much does a wedding photographer cost in South Africa? It is the first question almost every couple asks us, usually in the opening line of the first email, and the honest answer is an uncomfortable one: there is no single number, and you should be a little wary of anyone who hands you one without asking about your day first. A two-hour elopement on a weekday morning and a two-day celebration with four photographers and a film crew are not the same job. They cannot share a price any more than a bakkie and a bus can share a fuel bill.

What we can do is show you our own ladder in plain rands, explain what genuinely pushes a price up or down, and give you enough understanding to read anybody's quote properly — including the parts they would rather you skimmed. We are The Wedding Story: wedding photography and film, based in Cape Town, covering the whole country. Everything below is our pricing and our terms. It is not an industry survey, and where we do not know something, we will say so rather than make it up.

Why nobody can answer "how much does a wedding photographer cost in South Africa" with one number

Wedding photography is priced on three things that move independently of one another: time on the day, people on the day, and work after the day. Change any one of them and the price changes. A photographer who quotes you a single flat figure before knowing your hours, your guest count, your venue and whether you want a film is either doing exactly one kind of wedding or guessing — and you will find out which on the day.

You will also find articles online confidently stating "the average cost of a wedding photographer in South Africa". We are not going to add another number to that pile, because we do not have a survey we would stake our name on, and an invented average has a way of being quoted back for years as though it were a fact. If you want a picture of the market, do the only thing that actually works: collect real quotes from real photographers, for your real date, in your real town. Three or four proper quotes will teach you more than any average ever could.

A price you can't explain is a price you can't compare. Ask what the number is buying, and the whole industry becomes a lot less mysterious.

Our ladder: R4,499 to R99,499

We publish eighteen packages. They start at R4,499 and end at R99,499. To be clear, these are our own prices — not a benchmark, not a market rate, and not what anybody else charges.

  • R4,499 — the elopement. Two hours, one photographer, 80+ photographs. It is a small, complete, properly photographed thing: you two, whoever you brought, and the light.
  • R99,499 — the flagship. Two days plus an engagement shoot, four photographers and three videographers, 3,500+ photographs, and a fifteen-minute film.
  • Everything in between. Sixteen more steps, all of them the same craft at different scale — more hours, more people, more frames, and from a certain point, film.

Travel anywhere in South Africa is included in every one of them. More on that below, because it matters more in this country than almost anywhere else.

Please note: the figures in this article are correct as at the date of publishing — see the packages page for current pricing.

What actually drives the cost

1. Hours on the day

This is the most obvious lever and the one couples underestimate most. Every extra hour is an hour of shooting, but it is also an hour of frames to sort, cull, grade and deliver — so hours cost twice. A two-hour elopement genuinely is a two-hour job. A full day that begins with the dress hanging on a cupboard door and ends when the dance floor gives up is closer to twelve or fourteen hours on our feet, before a single photograph has been edited.

2. How many of us are there

One photographer can only stand in one place. That is not a marketing line, it is geometry. If you want the aisle from the front and your mother's face from the side at the same instant, that is two people. If you want the ceremony covered while the reception room is still empty and perfect, that is two people. Our ladder climbs from one photographer to four, and adds videographers on top of that at the upper end. Every additional person is a real professional being paid properly for a long day — which is exactly why crew is the single biggest jump in any quote you will ever read, ours included.

3. How many photographs you end up with

More coverage produces more keepers, and every keeper is hand-graded by us, one at a time. This is why photo count is not a vanity number on a price list — it is a direct measure of how many hours of skilled work happen after your wedding. It also drives your delivery date, which we come back to below.

4. Whether there is a film

A film is not a photographer pointing the same camera at a different button. It is separate people, separate equipment, separate audio, and an editing process that runs on its own track for months. In our ladder, cinematic film is included from R18,499 up. Below R18,499 our packages are photography only — no film, no highlight reel, no exceptions dressed up in soft language. We would rather you knew that now than discovered it in month four.

5. Editing time and how much of it is yours to direct

The last lever is the one nobody advertises: how much editing attention the package carries, and how much say you get over it. On our ladder that shows up as client review rounds — the formal opportunity to come back to us and ask for changes to the edit.

  • Below R12,499: no review rounds. You receive our edit.
  • R12,499 – R21,499: one round.
  • R25,499 – R43,499: two rounds.
  • From R51,499: unlimited rounds.

If you are the kind of person who will want to sit with the gallery and talk it through, that is worth knowing before you choose a tier rather than after.

Arrival time is a pricing decision, not a scheduling one

Here is a detail most couples never think to ask about, and it changes photographs more than almost anything else on the invoice: how long is the photographer there before the ceremony starts?

On our ladder, arrival before the ceremony is 20 minutes on packages up to R17,499, 40 minutes once you are over R17,499, and 1.5 hours once you are over R25,000. Twenty minutes is enough to arrive, read the room and be in position. Ninety minutes is a different kind of photograph altogether — it is your gran arriving, the flowers still being fussed with, your best friend's hands shaking on the buttons, the whole slow build before anyone has said a word. Neither is wrong. But if the getting-ready hour is the part you are most sentimental about, that sentiment has a tier attached to it, and you should choose deliberately.

The half of the job that happens after everyone goes home

This is where wedding photography stops resembling any other purchase. You do not receive the product on the day you buy it. You receive a sneak-peek gallery within one week — enough to post, enough to send to the people who could not come, enough to hold you.

Then you wait. Our full gallery and film land in four to six months, scaling with how many photographs your package carries:

  • Up to 450 photographs — roughly four months.
  • 550 to 1,500 photographs — roughly five months.
  • 1,750 and up — roughly six months.

We know how that reads the first time. It reads like a long time, because it is a long time. Every image is hand-graded — not batch-processed, not run through a preset and shipped. If you want the full explanation of where those months actually go, we wrote it out in detail: why hand-editing wedding photos takes time. The short version is that the bigger the package, the more hours of human attention it contains, and hours cannot be compressed by wanting them to be.

Rush editing: what money can and cannot buy

Sometimes four months does not suit. A visa, a family member who is not well, a move overseas — real reasons, and we have heard most of them. So we offer rush editing, and we want to be precise about what it is.

Rush editing is R100 per photograph, bought in bundles of 50, minimum R5,000, and it is capped at the number of photographs your own package includes — you cannot rush 500 images out of a package that holds 300. You can add it to your contract upfront, or ask for it any time afterwards. There is no cut-off.

And here is the part we will not soften: rush editing does not buy a delivery date. It buys priority and effort. It moves your work to the front and puts more of us on it — we work odd hours, day and night, and that is genuinely how it gets done. But we will not promise you a date we cannot control, because a promised date that slips is worse than an honest "as fast as humanly possible". If a studio guarantees you a hard date on a rush job, ask them what happens if they miss it, and get the answer in writing.

Travel: the South African line item

This country is big in a way that quietly wrecks wedding budgets. Cape Town to a farm outside Nieu-Bethesda is not a taxi ride. Cape Town to a game lodge in Limpopo is a flight, a hire car and two nights somewhere.

Our position is simple: we are based in Cape Town, we cover all of South Africa, and travel within South Africa is included in every package — from the R4,499 elopement to the R99,499 flagship. The number you see is the number.

We are not going to tell you what anybody else does about travel, because we do not know and would only be guessing. What we will tell you is that travel is the most common place for a quote to quietly grow between signature and wedding day, and it is worth interrogating on every quote you receive. We have set out the full list of questions in the costs couples miss when booking a photographer.

Ask this of anyone you quote: "Is travel to my venue included in this figure, or billed separately — and what about accommodation if the day runs late?" Get the answer in the contract, not in an email thread you will never find again.

How the money is actually paid

Our terms are deliberately boring, which is what you want from terms. A 30% deposit secures your date, paid by EFT. The balance is due two weeks before the wedding. That is it — no third payment nobody mentioned, no invoice landing while you are on honeymoon.

Two practical things follow from that. First, the deposit is the moment your date stops being available to anyone else, so if you are deciding between us and someone else, decide before your date goes. Second, budget for the balance in the same week you are paying the venue, the caterer and everyone else — that fortnight before the wedding is expensive, and it arrives faster than you think.

Working out your own number

Forget averages. Answer these five questions honestly and you will land within one or two tiers of where you belong:

  1. What hours do you actually want covered? Not "the whole day" reflexively — genuinely. Does the story start with the dress on the door, or at the aisle? Does it end at the first dance, or at 2am?
  2. How many people do you need us to be? A hundred guests in one room is a different problem from three hundred spread across a lawn, a marquee and a bar.
  3. Do you want a film? If yes, you are at R18,499 or above with us. If you are unsure, ask yourself whether you want to hear your dad's voice in twenty years, or only see him.
  4. How many photographs do you actually want to live with? More is not automatically better. It is more to look through, and a longer wait.
  5. How much do you care about the edit being yours? If you will want to weigh in, look at where the review rounds start.

Then pick the tier that matches the answers, not the tier that matches the number you first had in your head. The number in your head came from nowhere.

On cheap, and on expensive

A cheap package is not a scandal and an expensive one is not a scam. On our ladder, both ends are honest work — the difference is scope. R4,499 buys two hours, one photographer and 80+ photographs, and for a couple eloping quietly that is not a compromise, it is exactly correct. R99,499 buys two days, seven professionals and a film, and for a two-day, multi-venue celebration that is not extravagance, it is what the day requires.

The mistake is not spending too little or too much. The mistake is spending without knowing what you bought — booking a package below R18,499 while assuming a film appears, or booking the smallest tier and being surprised there is no review round. Everything on our ladder is written down precisely so that cannot happen to you. If you want help reading the rest of the quotes on your desk, our guide to choosing your wedding photographer is the next thing to read.

And if you want a real number for your real day, just ask us. Tell us the date, the place and roughly what you picture, and we will point at a tier and tell you why — including, if it is the truth, that a smaller one would suit you better. We would rather you booked the right package than the biggest one. You only get to do this once, and we would like you to enjoy it.
