Talking about a "dry season" on the Eastern Cape coast comes with a caveat most other regions don't need: this stretch of coastline experiences wind and changeable weather across the whole year, without a single dominant wet or dry period the way the Western Cape or the Lowveld have. So rather than pointing to one clearly settled season, it's more accurate to say that some stretches of the year here tend to lean more stable than others.
Generally, the months either side of deep winter — late summer into autumn, and again toward late spring — are often considered relatively steadier by locals, without the more active weather systems that tend to move through during the sharper seasonal transitions. That's a tendency rather than a rule, and any given week can defy it, but it's a reasonable starting point if predictability is high on your list of priorities.
What "settled" means here is also worth defining honestly. It doesn't mean windless — this coast is rarely genuinely still — but rather a lower chance of the kind of active, blustery systems that can complicate an outdoor ceremony or send décor flying. Even on a comparatively calm day, a light sea breeze is close to a constant feature, and most experienced local suppliers plan for it as a matter of course rather than treating it as unusual.
For couples prioritising comfort alongside stability, the shoulder months often strike a useful balance: generally milder than deep winter, generally calmer than the more transitional weeks, and without summer's peak-season crowding in popular coastal towns. That combination can make logistics — accommodation, venue availability, supplier bookings — noticeably easier to manage too.
Photographically, these steadier stretches tend to offer more consistent light through the day, since fewer dramatic weather changes mean fewer surprises for outdoor portrait sessions. That said, plenty of photographers who work this coast regularly will tell you that its more dramatic, changeable days — moody skies, visible wind in a veil or in the sea itself — often produce the most memorable images, so "settled" isn't automatically the same as "better" from a creative standpoint.
It's worth being direct with your venue or planner about what you're hoping for, because their read on typical conditions for your specific date will be more useful than any general seasonal guide. A property right on an exposed point will behave differently from one tucked into a more sheltered bay, even on the same day and in the same season.
