
Sunset Times in SA: Build a Real Photo Timeline
There is no single answer to what time the sun sets in South Africa, and if you are building a wedding timeline around it, that is the whole problem. On 15 December the sun goes down over Cape Town at 19:53. That same evening, 1,271 km away in Durban, it set at 18:53 — a full hour earlier, on the same date, with both cities reading the same time on the same clock.
We run one time zone across a very wide country, so the clock on the wall and the sun in the sky drift apart — and they drift by a different amount depending on where you stand and what month it is. Below are the times, city by city and month by month, and what to do with them.
What time does the sun set in South Africa? Your wedding has six answers
South African Standard Time is pinned to the 30°E meridian, which runs almost exactly through Durban. Everything west of that line runs late.
Cape Town sits at 18.4°E — 12.6 degrees west of Durban. The earth turns fifteen degrees an hour, so that gap is worth about fifty minutes of solar time. The sun reaches its highest point over Durban at about 11:50 and over Cape Town at about 12:41. Cape Town's real midday is three quarters of an hour after the clock claims it is midday.
That fifty-minute offset is fixed. It never changes, all year. What changes is the second effect: latitude.
Cape Town is about four degrees further south than Durban. In summer, further south means longer days, so Cape Town's sunset is pushed later still — the two effects stack, and the gap opens to a full sixty minutes. In winter, further south means shorter days, so latitude pulls the other way and cancels about ten minutes of the longitude gap. By June, Cape Town's sunset is only forty-one minutes after Durban's.
So "an hour apart" is true in December. In June it is closer to forty minutes. Neither number is intuitive, and neither is on your clock.
Sunset times by month, city by city
These are mid-month times in SAST, calculated for each city's own coordinates. They assume a flat horizon at sea level, and each month lists the cities latest first. Please read the two warnings underneath before you plan anything on them.

Notice that the order shuffles. In January, sorting by sunset happens to line the cities up neatly west to east. By June it does not: Gqeberha sits well west of Johannesburg and so "ought" to be later, but its sunset comes first, because it is nearly eight degrees further south and sheds winter daylight faster. Longitude sets the baseline. Latitude decides who wins in winter.
To look up your own date, any ephemeris will do — but set it to your actual town rather than the nearest big city, and check it is giving you SAST. A hundred kilometres due west is worth about four minutes of sunset, and in this country four minutes can be the difference between standing in golden hour and watching it from the car park.

The mid-month trap
Those times are for the 15th. Sunset does not sit still, and how fast it moves depends entirely on the season.
Around the equinoxes it sprints. In Cape Town, sunset falls roughly forty minutes across March alone — 19:22 on the 1st, 18:42 on the 31st. Sunset on 28 March is 18:46 — plan that wedding off the mid-month number and you have quietly lost eighteen minutes of light you thought you had. April drops about thirty-five minutes. February about twenty-eight.
Around the solstices it barely moves. Across the whole of June, Cape Town's sunset shifts by about four minutes. A June wedding is forgiving. A March or April one is not.
Look up your actual date. Not the month.
How much light you get after sunset
Sunset is not the end of the light. It is the start of civil twilight — the sun is below the horizon but still lighting the sky, and there is real, soft, usable light in it.
Across these six cities, civil twilight runs to somewhere between about 23 and 29 minutes. Cape Town gets the most, close to half an hour in December. Johannesburg gets the least, down to about 23 minutes near the equinoxes. As a working rule: add 25 minutes to sunset, and that is when the light genuinely goes.
It is worth being concrete about what that light actually is. For the first ten minutes or so after sunset the sky is still bright and the light arrives from everywhere at once — soft, even, no hard shadows anywhere. It is genuinely kind to faces, and some of the quietest frames of an evening live in it. The next ten minutes go blue and dim quickly. By the end of civil twilight the sky is the only source left, and it is nearly out.
It is also shorter than most people expect, and it behaves backwards. Twilight is shortest at the equinoxes and longest at the solstices — in Cape Town, about 25 minutes in March and September, but nearer 29 in December. The sun's path meets the horizon at a steeper angle in March, so it drops through the twilight band faster.
Twenty-five minutes. Not an hour. If your plan quietly assumes "we'll do the photos after sunset", you have far less runway than you think.
Building the timeline backwards from sunset
Once you have a real sunset time, the day builds itself backwards from it. The full running order is in our wedding day photo timeline; the short version is that sunset is the anchor and everything else is scheduled off it.
- Sunset to sunset +25 minutes — the last soft light, and the real end of the day's photographs.
- The hour before sunset — golden hour. If you want the warm, low, flattering light that is on your mood board, couple portraits belong here and nowhere else. Why golden hour looks the way it does is worth reading before you decide what to give up for it.
- Two to three hours before sunset — family and group photographs, while there is still easy daylight and people are still findable.
- Three hours or more before sunset — the ceremony, if you want everything above it to happen without anyone being marched.
Now run that arithmetic on a 17:00 ceremony in Durban in June. Sunset is 17:03. You have finished before you have started. That is not a scheduling quibble — it is the difference between a full set of portraits and none at all.
The identical 17:00 ceremony in Cape Town in December gives you until 19:53. Nearly three hours. Same time on the invitation, completely different day. This is why the ceremony start time is the single decision that most determines what your photographs look like.
The horizon in the almanac is not your horizon
Every time in this article assumes a flat horizon at sea level. Almost no South African wedding venue has one.
The published time is when the sun clears a flat, distant horizon. Put a mountain in the way and your light ends earlier. A venue under the Helderberg, deep in a Winelands valley, on the eastern flank of Table Mountain or in a Berg valley loses direct sun well before the almanac time. How much earlier depends entirely on how high the ridge is and where you stand relative to it — there is no formula for it. The sky stays bright; the light on your faces is simply gone.
It cuts the other way too. A venue with a clean western view over water or flat ground gets the full published time, and a little afterglow on top.
One wrinkle when you ask: the sun does not set in the same place all year. Across South Africa the sunset point swings roughly sixty degrees along the horizon — well south of west in midsummer, well north of west in midwinter. A ridge that swallows your December sun may be nowhere near your June sun. So ask about your month, not in general.
The only reliable method is to stand at the venue, at roughly the right time of year, and look west. If you cannot, ask the venue what time the sun goes behind the ridge in your month. A venue that has hosted evening weddings should have an answer, and it is a fair thing to ask.
What we would tell you to do
Three things.
Look up your actual date and your actual town — not the month, and not the nearest big city. The list above is a starting point, not a plan.
Put the ceremony earlier than feels necessary. The mistake that costs you light is a ceremony that starts too late, not one that starts too early. Nobody has ever stood in golden hour wishing they had half an hour less of it.
Ask your venue where the sun actually goes. The almanac gives you a number. The ridge gives you the truth.
And if the answer is uncomfortable — a 17:03 sunset against a 16:30 ceremony — it is far better to know now than on the day. Moving a ceremony ninety minutes earlier costs nothing on paper and changes everything in the gallery. It is a much better lever than anything anyone can do with a camera afterwards.
