
Reading the Light for the Recessional
A church or chapel aisle almost never has one light source, and the recessional is the moment that difference matters most. For the whole ceremony, a couple stands more or less still, facing one direction, under whatever light happens to fall on that one spot. The recessional moves them through the entire room in a matter of seconds — past stained glass, under shadowed beams, toward whatever daylight is coming through the door at the far end — and each few steps can change the available light completely.
The doorway itself is usually the biggest factor. Most ceremony spaces are noticeably darker than the world immediately outside them, which means a couple walking toward an open door is walking toward a wall of brightness that can easily overwhelm an exposure if it isn't anticipated. Metered for the dim interior, that doorway blows out to featureless white. Metered for the doorway, the interior — and often the couple themselves, while they're still inside it — reads far too dark. Knowing which matters more for a particular shot, and being ready to adjust as the couple crosses that threshold, is largely what separates a recessional sequence that holds together from one where half the frames don't work.
Direction complicates this further, and it behaves differently below the equator than intuition built on Northern-Hemisphere assumptions might suggest. In the Southern Hemisphere it's the north-facing side of a building that tends to catch the most consistent sun through the day, which affects which side of an aisle throws harder shadow and which side stays comparatively even. A doorway facing that stronger light can turn into a bright silhouette opportunity — the couple as dark shapes stepping into a glowing rectangle — while a doorway facing away from it tends to give a softer, more evenly lit walk with less contrast to manage.
Season changes the exit, not the aisle
The inside of a ceremony space barely changes with the seasons, but what waits on the other side of the door does. A Western Cape wedding in winter often opens onto flat, grey, rain-softened light — gentler on skin tones, forgiving of a slightly slower walk, but also dimmer overall, which can call for a different approach than the couple might expect from photographs they've seen of summer weddings. A summer exit in the same region tends to be the opposite: hard, bright, high-contrast sun that can turn a doorway into pure white glare within seconds if it hasn't already been planned for. Inland and further east, where summer brings its own pattern of clear mornings and afternoon storms rather than the Cape's wet winters, a couple walking out on a clouded-over afternoon might get gentler light than the forecast implied, while a bright morning can read harsher than the ceremony itself suggested.
None of this can be fixed once the couple is already walking. It has to be read in advance — a glance at the doorway, a sense of where the sun actually sits relative to the building, a rough feel for what today's particular sky is doing — so that when the recessional happens, the light has already been accounted for rather than discovered in the moment.
