
Reading the Light for Sparklers and Fire at Your Wedding
A sparkler throws surprisingly little usable light beyond about a metre, which is exactly why so many sparkler photographs end up as a smear of white streaks and not much else. Getting a proper photograph out of that light means working with what's actually there, not fighting it.
The trick is balance. A sparkler is a small, hot point of light against whatever ambient glow still exists in the room or the sky — string lights, the last blue of dusk, a fire pit, the venue's own lighting. A photographer will usually meter for that background glow first, then let the sparkler's trail record on top of it, often holding the shutter open a fraction longer than usual so the light has time to draw its own line rather than just flare and blow out.
Timing matters more than the sparklers themselves
Because South Africa's seasons run opposite to the Northern Hemisphere's, the "right" time for a sparkler send-off shifts a great deal across the year. A summer wedding in Cape Town or KwaZulu-Natal might not lose real daylight until well past eight in the evening, while a winter reception in the same city could be photographing this moment in near-total darkness by six. Rather than fixing a time on the day-of schedule, it's worth planning the send-off around the light that's actually available on the night, with some flexibility built in on either side of sunset.
The window that tends to photograph best is the last stretch of blue-hour colour in the sky — enough residual light to hold detail in faces and guests, but dark enough that the sparklers themselves read as bright, defined trails rather than washing out against a still-bright background.
Fire behaves differently to sparklers
Fire — a bonfire finale, a fire pit at a Karoo or bushveld venue, even candlelight left burning on tables — is a stronger, warmer and far less predictable light source than a sparkler. It flickers and shifts colour temperature constantly, which means a photograph taken a second earlier or later can look completely different. Where a sparkler gives one thin line of light, a fire casts a broad, moving wash across faces, and a photographer generally has to choose whether to expose for the flame itself, which keeps rich colour and deep shadow everywhere else, or for the people standing around it, which softens the flame but reveals more of their expressions.
Wind plays a bigger role than most couples expect, too. It affects which way sparks and flames lean, where smoke drifts, and where a photographer can actually stand without flame or smoke coming between the lens and the couple. Working out timing and positioning beforehand with whoever is running the send-off — a planner, an usher, the DJ — tends to matter more than any camera setting on the night.
None of this is really about equipment. It's about reading whatever light is left at that hour and deciding, in the moment, whether to chase the glow of the fire or the last colour draining out of the sky — because trying to fix a poorly timed sparkler or fire photograph afterwards rarely brings back what wasn't there to begin with.
