How to Look Great in Your Wedding Photos
“We're so awkward in front of a camera.” We hear it from almost every couple — and then their photos come back looking relaxed, warm and completely natural. The secret isn't being photogenic. It's a handful of small, practical things that take the pressure off. Here they are.
1. Do something, don't pose
Static posing is what feels awkward. Movement is what looks natural. Walk together, whisper something, share a slow dance, spin, hug from behind. When your body is doing something, your face relaxes on its own — and that's when the real photo happens. A good photographer will keep you gently moving rather than freezing you in place.
The most flattering “pose” is usually just being with each other and forgetting the camera is there.
2. Book an engagement shoot
An hour in front of the camera before the wedding is the best confidence booster there is. You learn how you photograph, you get comfortable with your photographer, and by the wedding day it feels like an old friend is documenting your day — not a stranger. You can add an engagement session to any of our collections — just ask when you book.
3. Connect with each other, not the lens
You don't have to smile at the camera the whole time. Look at each other. Rest your forehead on theirs. Laugh at how ridiculous it feels. Those in-between glances — the ones that aren't “for” the camera — are almost always the images couples fall in love with. (It's the heart of a documentary style.)
4. Relax your hands and shoulders
Tension hides in the hands and shoulders. Let your fingers stay soft (hold a bouquet, hold each other, touch a lapel), drop your shoulders, and breathe out. Your photographer will remind you — it's one of the most common gentle cues on the day.
5. Trust your photographer's direction
You've chosen a professional for a reason. When they suggest turning your chin, shifting your weight to your back foot, or angling toward the light, it's because they can see what you can't. Small adjustments make a big difference — and none of them require you to “perform”.
6. The same goes for the camera that films you
If your collection includes a wedding film, being natural on video is exactly the same skill — keep moving, keep connecting, and forget the lens. The upside: a good film team shoots from a respectful distance with long lenses, so you'll rarely notice them. Relax into each other and your footage will feel every bit as honest as your photos.
7. Eat, hydrate, and take a beat
You'll look how you feel. A couple who's eaten, had some water and taken five quiet minutes together photographs completely differently from one running on empty and adrenaline. Build a little breathing room into the day — it shows on your face. (Our timeline guide shows exactly where.)
8. Let it be fun
The best portrait sessions feel like a mini-date, not a chore. Put on music, be silly, steal a kiss. The joy you feel is the joy the camera sees. Wedding photos aren't about looking perfect — they're about looking like you, on the happiest day of your life.
Do these, and “we're so awkward” turns into “we can't believe these are us”. Every single time.
