Marrying on the Garden Route in December
December is peak season on the Garden Route, and for good reason. This is generally the warmest, sunniest stretch of the year along this stretch of coast, and it coincides with the school holidays, which means family and friends are far more likely to have the time free to travel and make a full trip of it. For a lot of couples, that combination makes December an easy, obvious choice.
Warm days are the norm at this time of year, and long, bright evenings give plenty of room for an outdoor ceremony followed by golden-hour portraits without anyone racing against the light. That said, rain remains a genuine possibility on this coastline even in high summer, since the Garden Route doesn't follow the same dry-summer pattern as the Western Cape further along the coast. A brief afternoon shower turning up on an otherwise glorious December day isn't unusual, so a covered fallback is still worth having even in the sunniest month of the year.
The obvious challenge with a December wedding here is the crowds. This is the busiest time of year for the whole region, with holidaymakers filling towns like Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Venues, accommodation and favourite photo locations can all be considerably busier than at other times of year, so couples marrying in December should expect to book well in advance and to build a little more patience into logistics — traffic on the N2, fuller restaurants, and popular beaches or viewpoints that may not feel as private as they would in a quieter month.
Photographically, December's strong sun calls for some thought about timing. The middle of the day can produce harsh, high-contrast light that isn't especially flattering, so many couples and their photographers favour scheduling key portrait sessions for the softer light of early morning or, more commonly, the hour or two before sunset. Guest comfort is generally easier to manage than in winter — lighter clothing suits the season well — though the heat and sun exposure of a midday outdoor ceremony are worth planning around, with shade, water and seating considered as part of the day rather than an afterthought.
Because it's the height of the local tourist season, December on the Garden Route also has a lively, celebratory atmosphere that some couples love as a backdrop to their wedding — a sense of the whole region being in full swing, rather than the quieter, sleepier feel of the off-season months.
